F-1 Visa Eligibility and Application Requirements

The F-1 visa is available to foreign nationals planning full-time academic study at an SEVP-certified institution, including colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, high schools, private elementary schools, and language training programs. Before applying, you’ll need to demonstrate English proficiency (or enrollment in a program leading to it), sufficient financial resources to cover tuition and living expenses for the full duration of study, and a foreign residence you don’t intend to abandon.

Your institution issues Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status), which you present at your consular interview. You must also pay the SEVIS fee and enroll in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System before the visa interview. F-1 status isn’t available for public elementary school attendance or public adult education programs. If you’re already in the US under another nonimmigrant status, you may be able to change to F-1 without applying from abroad.

Maintaining Your F-1 Status After Arrival

F-1 students are admitted for “duration of status” (D/S), meaning your authorization covers the full period of full-time study plus a 60-day grace period after program completion. You must remain enrolled full-time and finish your program within the timeframe listed on your Form I-20. No extension of stay is required under normal conditions as long as those requirements are met.

SEVIS tracks your enrollment, program changes, transfers, and employment authorization in real time. Your school’s Designated School Official (DSO) is required to notify the government promptly if you fail to register or fall out of status. If you travel outside the US for up to five months, you can be readmitted in F-1 status with a current DSO-endorsed I-20, a valid F-1 visa, and a passport valid for at least six months. Spouses and unmarried minor children may qualify for F-2 dependent visas, which don’t carry employment authorization. Unauthorized work or dropping below full-time enrollment without authorization can trigger serious immigration consequences.

Work Authorization for F-1 Students

F-1 students can’t work off-campus during the first academic year, though on-campus employment is permitted under certain conditions. After that first year, three forms of off-campus work authorization may become available.

WORK AUTHORIZATION OPTIONS
Off-Campus Employment for F-1 Students
Available after the first academic year; all employment must relate to your major area of study and be approved before work begins.
1
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Authorized by your DSO and integrated directly into your curriculum; must occur before your program end date. Twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates OPT eligibility at the same educational level.
2
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
Authorized by USCIS through Form I-765; post-completion OPT provides up to 12 months of work authorization. You may apply as early as 90 days before your program end date, and filing early is strongly recommended given current processing times.
3
STEM OPT Extension
Qualifying STEM graduates may apply for a 24-month extension, bringing total OPT authorization to 36 months, provided their employer participates in E-Verify.
