One distinction worth understanding: your F-1 status is tied to your I-20 and school enrollment, not to the visa stamp in your passport. The stamp may expire while valid F-1 status continues, as long as enrollment and the I-20 remain current.
Work Authorization for F-1 Students: CPT, OPT, and STEM OPT
Whether you can work while studying in the United States depends on your visa classification, your year of study, and the type of work. For F-1 students, several authorized pathways exist.
During your first academic year, off-campus employment isn’t permitted, though on-campus employment is available subject to USCIS conditions. After completing your first year, two primary work authorization options become available:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
CPT allows off-campus employment directly related to your field of study. It must be authorized by your DSO before work begins and is typically used for internships and cooperative education programs integral to your curriculum.
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
OPT permits up to 12 months of employment in a job directly related to your field of study, either before graduation (pre-completion OPT) or after (post-completion OPT). Authorization is issued by USCIS, not your employer. Students in STEM fields may qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, bringing total OPT work authorization to up to 36 months with a qualifying employer.
Any off-campus employment must be authorized in advance. Unauthorized work is a serious status violation with lasting immigration consequences.
